Thanks to Carrie Stalder of the Venture Cafe for the tip on an intriguing talk on Monday December 6, 2010 from noon-1pm EST by Shailendra Anand Yadav of the Broad Institute on “Analysis of Value Creation and Value Capture in the Microfluidics Market.” The talk is open to all and will be held as a webinar (see call-in and webex information below) so anyone can tune in, even those outside Boston. This webinar is part of a series organized by the MIT Systems Design and Management program.
Yadav is a graduate of the MIT SDM program and analyzed microfluidics commercialization during his master’s thesis, available here.
Abstract: In the last two decades, microfluidics has been changing the shape of genomics, drug discovery, proteomics, and point-of-care diagnostics. Advances in the technology have resulted in faster analysis time, increased throughput, and reduced cost, among other important benefits. However, Yadav reports that the life sciences end-users and the microfluidics players themselves are far from fully capturing the value of these advances. As an immature technology, microfluidics is to-date still only in the hands of innovators and early adopters, who are academic laboratories and research institutes. He will analyze the current state of the market and discuss genomics and point-of-care diagnostics that have captured the most value from the technology, while drug discovery has seen the least. He will also recommend short- and long-term strategies for increasing value capture and accelerating the adoption of microfluidics.
