General Fluidics (GF), founded in 2013, is an in vitro diagnostic company that has developed a novel end-to-end, fully integrated modular IVD platform for performing a growing array of blood and urine tests. The Axess platform uses a patented hybrid hardware architecture, fluidics and optoelectronic technologies to go beyond test results to deliver complete diagnostic information sets at the point of care.


In 2015, General Fluidics was a Partners Healthcare Innovations Award winner and the project served as an organizational case study for “organic entrepreneurship”. In 2016, after a successful benchmarking of the Axess prototype against MGH’s central laboratory performed by the MGH Department of Pathology, General Fluidics became the hospitals first direct investment in start-up company. In 2018, General Fluidics closed a Series A round and entered into an $50M/year supply agreement with a leading US veterinary diagnostic company.


Today GF is partnered with Invetech, a global leader in IVD product development, to commercialize the first-generation Axess IVD system and the company is seeking a talented multidisciplinary senior engineer to lead the multiphase hardware development program.

 

1. Senior Hardware Systems Engineer
This position will perform and lead product development activities including the management of a external product development firm. This is a hands-on position in a fast-paced start-up environment that requires an experienced hardware engineer capable of learning quickly. Due to the systems level responsibility of this position, the candidate should have a background in optoelectronics, microfluidics, robotics, signal processing and imbedded software.
• Define hardware, disposable and software design requirements, specifications and test programs
• Lead internal R&D program, which may include the development or optimization of electromechanical, optoelectronic, signal processing and/or microfluidic subsystems
• Act as primary technical contact for third party product development firm, which will include managing multi-organizational deadlines, documentation and technology transfer
• Work with software development team to test and debug software
• Work with assay development team to translate manufacturer’s assay protocols to Axess platform including optimization and verification testing
• Assist with the intellectual property development including IP strategy and filing
Requirements:
• M.S. or PhD in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering with 5 or more years of experience in hardware development. Preferably in an FDA regulated Environment.
• Experience with IVD or Life Science hardware development used for processing and analyzing blood
• Familiarity with common blood and urine analysis techniques including flow cytometry, coulter, ISE, spectrophotometry, turbidimetry, ELISA and PCR.
• Ability to develop plans and schedules for a complex project and lead them through completion
• Experience with SolidWorks, Labview and Altium (or similar PCB design software)
• Strong organizational and communication skills with the ability to work with directly with broad range of clinical, scientific, engineering, regulatory and business teams in a multiorganizational setting
 

2. IVD Disposables Engineer

This position will be responsible for developing and managing the disposables program as well as working with the hardware teams verify and troubleshoot the overall system performance. This is a hands-on position in a fast-paced start-up environment that requires an experienced engineer capable of learning quickly.
• Design, prototyping and testing of and single and multiuse disposable systems.
• Optimization of assay protocols, reaction conditions and development of respective systems requirements
• Development of verification protocols and QA/QC program
• Sourcing reagent supplies and manage relationship with reagent manufacturers
• Working with hardware engineering teams to transfer disposable systems to the Axess analyzer, troubleshoot problems and identify improvements
• Manage contract disposable manufacturing across multiple international contract manufacturers Assist with the intellectual property development including IP strategy and filing
• Direct and assist technician on day-to-day activities on testing and prototype evaluations
Requirements:
• B.S., M.S. or PhD in Engineering, Physics or Chemistry
• Experience with IVD or Life Science instrument disposable systems development
• Familiarity with disposables manufacturing technology (e.g. molding, thermal forming and bonding)
• Ability to develop plans and schedules for a complex project and lead them through completion
• Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills
• Proficiency in 3D CAD and SAS or equivalent statistical analysis software
• Strong organizational and communication skills with the ability to work with directly with broad range of clinical, scientific, engineering, regulatory and business teams in a multiorganizational setting
